Pacquiao-Mayweather fight in jeopardy
Mayweather and Golden Boy Promotions put out a press release Tuesday afternoon stating that since Manny Pacquiao didn’t want to comply to Olympic-style drug testing the March 13 fight is in jeopardy. I have been following the negotiations for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight because I am one of those who really want to see this fight. And I think the Mayweather camp really wants out at the first chance they see.
Recently, there have been some big demands from both sides. The Pacquiao camp is demanding that Floyd Mayweather Jr. should pay a penalty of $10 million for every pound or a fraction thereof should he come in overweight at the weigh-in like he did on his last fight. It is earlier agreed upon that both fighters will submit to Olympic-style drug testing because of the accusations of Floyd Mayweather Sr. that the Pacman is taking some performance enhancement drugs. Manny Pacquiao did not refuse to Olympic-style testing in contrast to the statement issued by the Mayweather camp. The only the thing Pacquiao and Roach are against is the timing of the taking of blood samples. Pacquiao said that he is willing to give blood samples before the kick-off conference and after the fight and give urine samples anytime. Roach said that Pacquiao is somewhat trypanophobic or afraid of needles and needs 3 or 4 days to recover whenever he gives blood. And Freddie Roach stated that he would not allow Pacquiao to give blood sample during training especially the day before the fight like the Mayweather camp is demanding because it may weaken him mentally. Roach said in an interview on 8countnews.com, “It’s just like having sex before a fight. You’re not supposed to have sex before a fight, it makes you weak. If you mentally think that, it will. I am not going to have my fighter going into a fight feeling weak and not sure of himself.”
I am quite surprised with Floyd Jr.’s statement regarding the issue, “In a fight of this magnitude, I think it is our responsibility to subject ourselves to sportsmanship at the highest level. I have already agreed to the testing and it is a shame that he is not willing to do the same. It leaves me with great doubt as to the level of fairness I would be facing in the ring that night.” Before speaking about fairness of the playing field, I think he has to remember that he came in 2 pounds over the 144 lb. limit at his last fight while his opponent came in at 142 lbs. Mayweather Jr. paid off Juan Manuel Marquez $600,000 as penalty for coming in over the limit for that fight and Pretty Boy Floyd won that fight via a 12-round unanimous decision.
I think the Mayweather camp is using this issue as a way out. First, they used the March 13 date thinking that the Pacman would not agree to it because it’s too early for him. It is apparent by the their statement here that they are forcing Pacquiao to take the test during his training. If the negotiations fall apart here, the fans of both sides will be calling the other fighter coward for sure.
